AFTER two weeks of hard work, and long nights, five winners have emerged from the tough competition to
become champions in the LAMP2WIN competition.

LAMP2WIN - which stands for Linux-Apache-MySQLPHP (LAMP) to Microsoft Windows - is designed to
improve and drive up holistic software development within the programmer community.

PHP.net.my, a Malaysian community of PHP software developers, is the key organiser for the event and is done in collaboration with MSC Malaysia and Microsoft Malaysia.

"Fundamentally, the competition aims to affirm the existence of multiple platforms in the computing world, with the ultimate goal of helping developers take a pragmatic approach to ensure that the applications they create are able to operate on any given platform," said Ahmad Amran Kapi, the founder of PHP.net.my.

The competition, which started on May 15, saw participants select one of the listed PHP applications, have
it migrated to the Microsoft Windows platform, and then upload the reprogrammed code to the contest's provided hosting service, which is available for public viewing.

All five winners walked away with RM2,000 in cash, a MSC Malaysia Participation Certificate. They will also
enjoy facilitated access to MSC Intensive Technoprenuer Programme and the eventual RM150,000 pre-seed fund.

That, apparently, is the motivating factor for many of the registered entrants. For the blog category, a two-person team, consisting of Iwani Khalid, project manager of The Heads, and Aizuddin Ikmal Ahmad, open source technologist of MalaysiaKini, took home the title with their Wordpress concept.

As for the forum category, Shahrun Nadzree Khairil, a software analyst for Framework Sdn Bhd, proved he is the best with his re-coded MiniBB.

Mohd Suffian Othman, senior mechanical engineer for the Public Works Department, delivered his best in the e-commerce category as he showcased his concept with the OSCSS. In the wiki category, Nasrul Amri Samsudin, chief executive officer of VIMC, won with his MediaWiki entry, while Muhamad Abdul Hay Sulaiman, co-founder of Haynik Mobile Commerce, was the winner of the CMS category through his Xoops programme.

Speaking on behalf of all the winners, Iwani said: "The competition made us aware of Microsoft's efforts in the open source arena. It's a surprising move and I must say one that is very relevant."

Echoed Shahrun: "It's good to see Microsoft going above and beyond its usual programmes as it moves to address the open source market. I'm really surprised by their push into this area but nevertheless it's good to see them acknowledging the open source potential."
