LAMP2WIN: Foreword from the organizer

Welcome to the LAMP2WIN website.  The theme, “World of Inter-Operability” brings the meaning to the Open Source community the message that we are not alone in software eco-system.  We have to come to terms with the existence of multiple platforms in the computing world.  To make our applications more robust, we have to take a pragmatic development approach and ensure that the applications we create are able to operate on whatever given platforms.
 
Interoperability is about how different software systems work together while Open Source is a methodology for licensing and/or developing software which it may or may not be interoperable.

Realizing the powerful capabilities of PHP, and the shortcomings of some Open Source applications available only on uni-platforms gave us the idea of holding this competition.

LAMP2WIN offers 20 Open Source applications in 5 different categories with partial or no support to the Windows platform, and each contestant will be assigned one of the applications on a round robin basis.

Each contestants will be given a PHP/IIS/MS SQL supported hosted space where they will be able to upload and operationalise their “migrated applications” at any time during the competition period.  This is important as uploaded and operational entries will be viewed and judged by both the public and the official judges.  Contestants are also encouraged to blog about their experience while performing the migration.  Although this is not mandatory, but it will help the judges understand the processes taken in the development cycle.

There is still much room for improvement in this event, and for that, please accept our humble apologies.  We invite everyone from the community to contribute your opinions; register yourselves, and let’s have interactive healthy discussions on the forum, Twitter, and Facebook on areas where we can improve.

The underlying idea of the competition is not really about selecting the best application, but to contribute back to the Open Source community and about achievements.  At the end of the day, the winners can brag about their feats and bag along the handsome winnings.  So, good luck to all !!!
