APPLICATIONS

1. 20 PHP applications: ·

  • The competition will list 20 PHP applications from the OSS repositories. Though technically impossible, we endeavor to select applications that are with the same level of complexity to level the playing field.
  • Each application selected will be ones developed for the Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP (LAMP) platforms with no or partial support for the Windows platform
  • Each contestants will be assigned one of these applications to migrate on a round robin basis.

2. Application Categories:

The PHP applications selected will be in either one of the following categories.  All contestants are required to download the applications directly from the respective OSS application repositories. Note: please use the latest GA release version of the applications.

CONTESTANTS:

Contestants can participate as any one of the following entities.

  • Individuals
  • Team
  • Companies

However, prizes will be given only the entity that wins, and not to each member of the entity.

HOW MANY ENTRIES CAN I SUBMIT?

Each entity is only allowed to submit one entry only.

JUDGES and JUDGING CRITERIA:

Judges for the competition shall be the followings:

  • Organizer judges: consisting of one individual from each organization, i.e. MS, MDeC, and PHP.net.my. This judges votes shall carry a total 60% weightage to the contestants total points. The criteria that the organizer’s judges would be looking at, but not limited to, are:
    • Integrity of original application: How intact is the original application including its polish of design, functionality and thematic execution
    • Functional Completeness: Is the project implemented, working, and "demonstration-ready"
    • Personal blog explaining the migration process (blog facility will be provided in www.lamp2win.com)
    • Contents of the migrated version of the original source code i.e. the Windows version of the LAMP version of the application (respository of the source code will be provided in www.lamp2win.com)
    • Inclusion of the migrated source code by the original application main tree and able to obtain the svn/git/source code control access
  • Public Votes: A public voting system shall be activated on this web site on May 23, 2009. The public can then start voting on each contestants and the votes shall carry a total 40% weightage to the contestants total points. The public voting shall end on May 30, 2009 at 12.01 am.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • You are 16 years of age or older; and
  • You are currently residing in Malaysia
  • You are not an employee or intern of Microsoft Corporation or subsidiary; or an employee or intern of MDeC; and
  • You are not involved in any part of the execution or administration of this Contest; and
  • You are not an immediate family member of (parent, sibling, spouse, child) or household member of a Microsoft employee, subsidiary, or MDeC employee or a person involved in any part of the administration and execution of this Contest

COMPETITION FORMAT:

  • Contestants signing up will be assigned a USERID and PASSWORDS to the hosting service on May 14, 2009
  • The contestants will be given a period of about 14 days to migrate the selected PHP application to the MS Windows platform
  • At any point during the contest period, the contestants are allowed to make their sites public, to receive comments and feedbacks, should they choose to do so
  • The final code entry MUST be completed and uploaded to the host by May 30, 2009 at 12.01am
  • Winners will be announced by May 30, 2009 at 12.01 pm
  • Press Conference and prize giving to the winners will be done during the MSC OSCON Award Party on June 3, 2009 at 6.30 pm. During which, the winners are expected to be present and reveal the:
    • Description of their projects ·
    • Their team members (if applicable)

LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY:

By entering this competition, each entity shall agree:

  • To abide by the Official Rules; and
  • To the extent allowable under applicable law, to release and hold us and our Sponsors, and our respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, employees and agents from any and all liability or any injury, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with this Contest or any prize won; and
  • That our decisions will be final and binding on all matters related to this Contest; and
  • That, by accepting a prize, we may use of your proper name and state of residence online and in print, or in any other media, in connection with this Contest, without payment or compensation to you, except where prohibited by law.
  • This Contest will be governed by the laws of Malaysia, and you consent to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the courts of Malaysia for any disputes arising out of this Competition.

WHAT IF SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENS AND THE COMPETITION CAN’T RUN AS PLANNED?

If someone cheats, or a virus, bug, catastrophic event, or any other unforeseen or unexpected event that cannot be reasonably anticipated or controlled, (also referred to as force majeure) affects the fairness and / or integrity of this Competition, we reserve the right to cancel, change or suspend this Competition. This right is reserved whether the event is due to human or technical error. If a solution cannot be found to restore the integrity of the Competition, we reserve the right to select winners from among all eligible entries received before we had to cancel, change or suspend the Competition. If you attempt to compromise the integrity or the legitimate operation of this Competition by hacking or by cheating or committing fraud in ANY way, we may seek damages from you to the fullest extent permitted by law. Further, we may ban you from participating in any of our future Competition, so please play fairly.

LICENSE

All resulting OSS application from this competition will be governed by its original licensing terms.
